Founded in 2009, Roomful of Teeth is a vocal project that experiments with the potential of the human voice. Through studying the vocal traditions across the globe, this eight person ensemble is always expanding its vocal vocabulary and is always inviting today’s best composers to create new, unexplored sounds. The ensemble gathers annually at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, where they’ve studied everything from Tuvan throat singing, yodeling, belting, Georgian singing, Inuit throat singing, Korean P’ansori, and Sardinian cantu a tenore styles with the world’s top performers and educators. Some of their world class composers include: Rinde Eckert, Judd Greenstein, Caleb Burhans, Merrill Garbus, William Brittelle, Sarah Kirkland Snider, and Missy Mazzoli.
The New York Times called their first album in 2012 “sensually stunning.” The album received a GRAMMY for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance and is also included on many Best of 2012 lists, topping the classical charts on iTunes and Amazon, even breaking into the top 10 on the Billboard charts. This monumental group will visit the Cleveland Museum of Art on March 20th, 2015 as part of the museum’s performing arts series.
