To Be Black in America Poem

Written by McCayla Connors

To Be Black in America

To be black in America

What does it mean to me?

To be black in America

is to stay on guard at all times

even if you only see half the struggle

you will still feel all the oppression.

To be black in America

you have to fight for your right to breathe

and the darker you are,

the stronger you must be.

to be black in America

means defending your people

from light to dark.

To be black in America

does not mean you are a criminal

no matter what society says.

To be black in America

you don’t have the bliss of ignorance

you have the power of brilliance.

To be black in America

is to be one of the greatest.

and knowing you did it all on your own.

To be black in America

means finding my ancestors voice in me.
